One of the things I hoped to achieve when I started writing children’s books was to inspire children to read and enjoy books. I wanted to create fun and exciting stories to feed their imagination and encourage them to create their own stories. I wanted to empower them to know that each and every one of them is capable of writing their own stories and that there are no wrong answers because it’s their story.

However, when I made the decision to self-publish my first book, I had no idea how it would turn out, whether children would actually like my story or whether I would even be able to sell any copies. For these reasons, I’m always so grateful to anyone who takes the time to let me know if they have enjoyed my books. Since my self-publishing journey began, I have been amazed by some of the wonderful comments and feedback I have received from children or their parents. Often, these are verbal comments from children in schools, but sometimes I receive some lovely messages via email or social media.

This message was sent to me from a parent following my visit to a local school in November 2021:

Hi Ross,

​

I just wanted to let you know, you’re practically a rock star in our house right now. My son is proudly trying to tell his dad all about you ‘you know Ross, who writes books’ while my husband looks completely blank at him and he’s clutching your book like a piece of treasure. He hasn’t let go of it since we got in. He’s even been watching the TV just holding it open a and looking at the pictures.

I received an order for a book following my visit to a local school in November 2021, along with this message:

My son was so inspired by your visit to his school, he’s decided to write his own troll book and been working on it all week!

​

After I responded, thanking them for their order and telling them how happy it had made me to know that I had inspired their son to write his own troll book, I then received the following response:

I read your message to my son and he was grinning from ear to ear and said he felt so proud that you were pleased he was writing a book. He has never said he’s proud before so it is our thanks to you for inspiring him and other children with your work. It really is life shaping.

I received this message from a parent who had pre-ordered one of my books prior to my visit to their children’s school in November 2021:

It’s very exciting for us. My son absolutely loves your rainbow bus book!  we had to keep renewing it on repeat when we got it from the library a few years ago as he didn’t want to return it, and he eventually chose and bought it from Swan books
